The city of Lévis, which was created by the merging of 10 former municipalities, constitutes its own MRC. Linked to Québec City by the Québec and Pierre-Laporte bridges, as well as by the Québec-Lévis ferryboat, this city is the main pole of economic and urban development of the Chaudière-Appalaches region.
Among the major attractions in Lévis, let’s mention the Cidrerie et Vergers Saint-Nicolas, where you will get to taste ciders, berry wines, syrups, jellies, jams and cider vinegars. It is also possible to pick your own fruit and visit the establishment. You can then go to the Érablière du Cap where you will have the chance to taste some delicious maple taffy. The parc des Chutes-de-la-Chaudière, for its part, offers you many viewpoints on a spectacular panorama of the 35-meter-high waterfall. You will have access to picnic areas, a hanging bridge above the river, pedestrian and cycle paths as well as a kiosk for outdoor concerts and a hydroelectric dam.
For walking, cycling and in-line skating enthusiasts, the Parcours des Anses cycle path runs along the St. Lawrence River for 10 miles and offers an exceptional viewpoint on the Québec’s bridges, the fortifications, the Château Frontenac, the Île d’Orléans and the Montmorency Falls on the North Shore. Those who like religious architecture will be pleased with the Au Fil des clochers lévisiens circuit, which will make you visit the two 100-year-old neo-classical style churches:,the Saint-Joseph Church and the Notre-Dame Church, respectively built in 1675 and 1850. If you are interested in history and you wish to learn more about it in an original way, the “Le Vieux-Lévis à la Chandelle” night walks will allow you to admire the architecture of the old city.
If you like sweet treats, you must stop at the Chocolat Favoris chocolate factory, located in an ancestral house. This traditional chocolate factory makes chocolates, sorbets and ice creams of all kinds that are said to be the best in town. People from both the north and south shores run to this place to buy white, milk and black chocolate or delicious truffles. It is even possible, upon reservation, to visit the demonstration room where you will be initiated to the chocolate making process.
After that, visit the Centre d’art de Lévis, which groups together under the same roof the Anglicane concert hall, where jazz and world music concerts as well as plays are presented; the Galerie Louise-Carrier, where you can visit various exhibitions, and a beautiful public garden. Then visit the Lévis Forts National Historic Site of Canada where you will see the Fort-Numéro-Un, which is the last one of the three forts built in 1865 and 1872. You will even get to tour this fortification line and cross tunnels, pillboxes and ramparts. On top of the fort, it is possible to have a picnic and walk along the path in the wooded area of the park.
If you like ships, stop at the Lieu historique national du Canada du Chantier A.C. Davie, an old naval shipyard from the 19th century. You will learn more about the men who once worked there and about the Davie family. It will even be possible to drop anchor from June to September. Above all, don’t miss the Maison Alphonse Desjardins, which was the residence of the founder of the first cooperative bank in America. A guided visit will make you discover the great moments of his life and career. Inaugurated in 1939, the Terrasse de Lévis is also worth a stop. This park offers an exceptional viewpoint on the Québec ramparts, Place Royale and the Château Frontenac. Finally, stop at the Vignoble et Cidrerie du Nordet, located near the Etchemin River, and where passionate people make white and red wine as well as aperitifs. A guided visit will allow you to tour the vineyard, to learn more about the types of vines, to visit the establishment and to sample delicious wines.
