Saint-Jean-Port-Joli is a must-see vacation destination. You will be enchanted by the marina, the workshops, the galleries, the restaurants, the hotels, inns and B&Bs, the museums and the parks that this village bears. Visit the magnificent church built in 1779 and that is now on the historical register. The coffered-vaults and its 4,500 rose windows are very beautiful. The various religious objects such as the Easter candle, the pulpit, the baptismal funds, the statues, the sanctuary lamp, the altar and the tabernacle are all works by local artists. In the sacristy, you can visit an exhibition presenting various nativity scenes. Among these scenes, you will see a nativity scene sculpted in a lime tree by 17 artists from the village and representing the pregnant Virgin Mary.
Visit also the Épopée de la Moto, the first museum in Canada dedicated to this vehicle. In here, you will find the magnificent collection owned by the Gagnon brothers, as well as a permanent exhibition on the history and evolution of motorbike in the world. Identification sheets and testimonies from former owners will give you information about the specifications and anecdotes of each engine. Your next stop should be the Musée des Anciens Canadiens, which celebrated its 30th birthday in 2005. It is the most prestigious wooden sculpture museum in North America. It traces back the history of sculpture and fine crafts in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli and it will make you discover why this village is Quebec’s capital of handicrafts. You will be enchanted by the various sculptures, of which some are life-size, like those representing René Lévesque, Pierre Elliot Trudeau, Félix Leclerc and even Harry Potter! Also, do not miss Musée de la mémoire vivante which presents you different exhibitions and activities based on the accounts, anecdotes and life stories of people like you and me. Finally, stop at the Sculpture en Jardin where bronze and stone sculptures are shown in a flower garden near the river. In the evening, visit the illuminated garden, which is simply spectacular.
