Grosse Île and the Irish Memorial National Historic Site of Canada

Open from mid-May to mid-October

In Memory of the New France Immigrants

Grosse-Île was used as a quarantine establishment for millions of immigrants between 1832 and 1937. Boats coming from Europe came here and unloaded their passengers, who stayed here for 40 days, to make sure no serious sickness would be taken to the colony. In 1847, thousands of Irish immigrants died from the terrible typhus fever epidemic.

Climb aboard the train and enjoy a commented visit of the village and the hospital section. You can also visit the Celtic cross, the disinfection building, the cemetery where are buried those who died on the island, as well as the memorial, which pays tribute to all the brave immigrants who crossed the Atlantic in hope of a better life in the New World.
