Thetford Mines is the centre-city of the MRC de L’Amiante, and its architectural heritage can be seen from the 10-mile-long cycle path that crosses the village. You can first stop at the Musée minéralogique et minier de Thetford Mines, the only earth science museum in America dedicated to the Appalachian geology. There, you will find a unique collection of minerals, including the oldest stone on earth, and you will learn more about Chrysotile asbestos. You can also visit underground mines. You will go down a 354-meter-deep well and visit removal sites, as well as the parc Jean-Dupéré. To discover the different facets of the miners work, you can also visit one of the galleries of the Mine Bell. Then, stop at the Belvédère d’observation de Black Lake, from where you can observe the mining at the Mine LAB Chrysotile. You will also have the chance to admire the gigantic open well with a diameter of 2 kilometres and a depth of 353 meters.
